"إن موت جان يكشف لي عن مغزى الجنازات العظيمة التي تقيمها الدول لأبطالها. أن أسى شعب فقد الرجل الذي أسر انتباهه يجعله ينغمس في أغرب الأخيلة: أعلام ترفع حتى منتصف السواري، وخطب، وبرامج إذاعية، وشوارع تسمى باسمه. بتلك الجنازة تعرّفت عائلة جان على التباهي، والأبهة الفخمة، وأغدق على الأم شعار النبالة طُرِّز عليه حرف "د" كبير باللون الفضي. سمعت وسط الظلام، وعيناي مغمضتان، صدى-أو بالأحرى، استطالة-عويل أو نداء بعيد جداً، كان صادراً من داخلي إلا أنّ له نبرة صوتٍ عالية تذكر بالنداءات الممطوطة لزوجات المزارعين وهن في البرية، نداءات تُسمَعُ في وقت متأخر من بعد الظهيرة في الخريف من خلف أكمة شوك، بالقرب من مستنقع، صادرة عن فتاة صغيرة تلكأت مع قطيعها من الأوز وهي ذاهبة لتحضر طعام إفطارها. ما سمعته كان نداءً مشابهاً، وبدا لي في لا واقعيته المادية وواقعيته الإنسانية أشبه بالصور التي تفلت من بؤبؤ العين حين يكون الإنسان شديد الإرهاق فتولد مشهداً رائعاً حقاً. كان حقاً يتعفن بين الورد، لكنه بدا أنه يفهم الوضع فهماً جيداً. وصمت وجهه الشاحب والضيق بحدّ ذاته كان صمتاً ذكياً. كان من الواضع أنه عرف أن البكاء والدموع سوف تغرقني في دوامات مأساوية هائلة، في متاهات عقلية لن أتمكن من التخلص منها".
تدور أحداث هذه القصة خلال فترة تحرير باريس من عام 1949، حيث كانت تسودها المذابح الهتلرية، وكانت الصحف حينها تعطي فكرة واضحة عما كانت عليه حقاً أيام البطولات الفرنسية الصبيانية، حيث كان الجسد يغور بالثقة بالنفس وبالاحترام، كان تلك الصحف تكشف عن الخدع في المذابح التي وصفها البعض بالسادية والتي قام بها رجال شرطة يجندون جلاديهم من بين صفوف الفرنسيين، والصور تعرض جثثاً مقطعة الأوصال ومشوهة، وأطلال قرى، كأورادور ومونسوش، أحرقها جنود ألمان. ضمن هذا الإطار المأساوي وقعت أحداث تلك القصة أهمها حادثة موت جان.د، وهي السبب الظاهري الذي دفع بالكتاب لنسج روايته هذه.
