كان "حافظ شيرازي" مدرِّساً للقرآن الكريم، وكان من حفظة القرآن الكريم، ولذلك سُمْيَ "حافظاً" واسمه الحقيقي "شمس الدين محمد"، وكان أثر القرآن الكريم واضحاً في شعره، وفي رموزه التي يعبر بها عن أفكاره الرمزية، مثل ذكره "هدهد سليمان"، و"أصف بن برخيا" وزيره، وغنى "قارون"، و"قصة الخضر"، و"سفينة نوح"، ونفَسَ "عيسى" في إحياء الموتى، و"قصة "ذي القرنين" وغير ذلك كثير، وكان "حافظ" مطلعاً على الشعر العربي، وله أبيات كثيرة تدلُّ على تأثره بالشعر العربي، دون أن يمسَّ تفرُّدَهُ الإبداعي.
"حافظ" مؤمنٌ بالله إيماناً عميقاً، ولكنه خارج الشكليات والنفاق الذي يراه عند بعض الناس بإسم الدين، وكان إيمانه عميقاً بعفو الله وغفرانه، وكان يرى أن الدين هو الجوهر، وليس المظهر، وكان ينفر من الذي يعبد ظاهر الأشياء ولا يغوص في الرؤية الكونية المتمثلة بالدين.
ومما شجَّعني على ترجمته هو شعوري بإنتمائنا أنا و"حافظ الشيرازي" إلى حضارة إنسانية واحدة هي الثقافة الإسلامية بمعناها الكوني واللابسة ثوباً عربياً قشيباً، إذن حافظ قرأ شعر أمتي وأعتنق دينها.
حداثة "حافظ" كانت شديدة الحضور في زمن يبدو أنه واقف لا يتحرك، ومن هنا تبدو أهمية ترجمة هذا الشاعر الكونيِّ الجريء، إنَّ حداثته إنقلابية جداً بالمعنى الفكري، إنه يمزق كلَّ الأقنعة التي تحجب الرؤية الصحيحة للكون، ولكن ليس بمادية قاتمة، وإنماء بإشراق يضيء من شيراز إلى آخر إنقلابي في الدنيا يريد أن يضيف ويحذف.
كانت هذه الحداثة حافزاً لي لأترجمه شعراً عربياً يخاطب قراء العربية بلسانٍ عربي مبين، لقد كنت أؤمن ولم أزل أن الشعرَ يهدف بإستمرار إلى تغير الإنسان، ورفع منسوب الروحيِّ فيه على الترابيّ، ورفع المقدّس في طبيعة المؤمن.
