عندما يكون الزمن مكسوراً تكون الكتابة أشبه بالبكاء والنزيف، وتصبح الكلمات مقهورة ومشحونة بالتوتر، ومن هنا صدقها وكمية الشعر فيها، فالشعر المقهور هو مضيء في النهاية، لأنه يمتص الداخل ويعصره في الخراج، والتوتر مادة الشعر الأولى، ومن أهم وقوده الغضب والقهر والتوتر. سئل أعرابي: "لِمَ مراثيكم أجمل شعركم؟" فأجاب: "لأننا نقولها، وقلوبنا محترقة" وعمر شلبي سطّر معاناته شعراً حمّله حصيلة عذابات وحزن خارقين في وجوده منذ العصر الزراعي الأول، كان الحزن في ذاته مرتبط بالفقر، وكان مرتبطاً بالفجر بالوصول إلى مبتغاه، الثراء، الأنثى، الحرية، وكتب في كل ذلك نتاجاً كان أغزره خلال فترة سجنه التي استمرت تسعة عشر عاماً، ففي ذلك العالم الداكن، تنكسر الحياة وتتقصف وكأنها أوراق الزيف، وتفد الكآبة للسجين من الداخل والخارج معاً لأن الزمن في داخله كان ينهار، كما الزمن العربي في الخارج أيضاً، كل شيء وحوله ثابت وسكان إلا هو، حيث كانت عذاباته تغلي لتتحول إلى غيمة فتمطر غيثاً تمطر معاني، تمطر شعراً، يعطي الشاعر دفعاً للحياة.
