من كان نزيهاً في النظام الشمولي يظل نزيهاً في النظام الديمقراطي. والعكس هو الصحيح. لقد نسبوا لأنفسهم العديد من أفعال الخير التي لم يشاركوا فيها أصلاً لا من قريب ولا من بعيد. وهم اليوم يتصدون المسيرات. يريدون بجانبهم أولئك الأشخاص الذين يشعرونهم بالخجل.
اعتقد أن الموت حياة ولكن من الجهة الاخرى فقط. تماماً كما ينشر الضوء الآن على الطرف الآخر من الأرض في حين نحن في الجهة المعاكسة من الشمس. الموت هو الطرف المقلوب من الحياة. وإذا كان مؤكداً أن الشمس ستعود فإن الحياة ستعود أيضاً، أمر جيد أن لا نعرف كيف هي الحياة هناك في العتمة.
كما لو أن القمر توقف في قبة السماء وراح يراقبها بفضول. تبادلا قبلاً حارّة، حاول معرفة ما إذا كانا سوف يمارس الجنس. كان أحبهما يشتهي الآخر. أحسا بارتعاش جسديهما. القمر والبعوض كانا الشاهدين الوحيدين على محاولتهما الجريئة الاولى، وربما أيضاً مستشار المدينة. إذ لم يكن نائماً فلا بد أنها دون شكّ أجمل لحظات عاشها منذ مئتي عام. أغفت مارتا بعد ذلك بسرعة. ولكن يوزيف ظل صاحياً وراح يراقب السماء.
