للعلماء مع مسيرة تاريخ الأدب، استراحة أدبية يتميزون بها ويأنسون إليها، وتكون لهم بمثابة نفثة لصدورهم المرهقة، وسكنة لأفئدتهم المعذبة، "كالخيام الفلكي" (الرياضي)، "وابن سينا" (الطبيب)... وكذا الأمر مع الحكيم النطاسي داود الأنطاكي. فرغم شهرته في عالم الطب كان له اهتمام كبير في ميدان الأدب. فقد عمد إلى تأليف كتاب في الأدب، وخصّه بالعشق. فتناول كتب من سبقوه ولا سيما "أشواق العشق"، فهذبه واسقط منه ما لم يره مناسباً، وأضاف عليه نصوصاً نادرة وشواهد لم يرد ذكرها في المظّان. كما أضاف عليه ما وصلت إليه فلسفته وثقافته الواسعة في العربية واليونانية والفارسية، واكثر من المنتخبات الشعرية له ولغيره. وصبّ ذلك كله في قالب تذوقه، وأخرجه بقالب جديد، لو قدر للكتاب الأصل أن يظهر لضارعه كتاب الأنطاكي: بل لبزّه وفاقه. فجاء الكتاب ذا مخطط علمي، حيث بدأه بتعريف العشق وآراء الحكماء فيه. ثم انتقل إلى المشهورين منهم، واختار أربعة توسع في ترجمتهم وذكر أخبارهم. وهو ضمن كل ترجمة يروي الأخبار والأشعار المناسبة للفكرة. ثم ينتقل إلى أخبار من العشق بين المحبوبين. ولم يقصر في التنويه لعشاق الغلمان، وعشق بين المحبوبين الأليفة، والجماد لمثيله. وكان أحيانا يذكر مصادره، وكثيراً ما كان يدلي برأيه وحكمه.
كما يتميز الكتاب بنظرات نقدية وفنية تستدعي الانتباه. فجاء الكتاب مفعماً بالأخبار النادرة التي تشوق القارئ وتسوقه إلى متابعة المطالعة. وجعله – بالإضافة إلى تاريخ أدب للعشاق، كتاب فكاهة وأنيس، وصفحات تنقل القارئ إلى كل محفل وعرس، يجعله حيناً يتألم، وحيناً يبتسم ويضحك. ولما كان هذا الكتاب من أحسن الكتب في موضوعه فقد عني بتحقيقه محمد التونجي، وتجلى عمله بـ: توثيق النص، وضبطه، التعريف بأبرز أعلامه: شارحاً الألفاظ العسيرة، وهدفه إظهار الكتاب بحلّته العلمية التي ترضي القراء والعلماء.
