يؤرخ هذا الكتاب لبلاد الشام ومصر خلال مدة تزيد عن نصف قرن تبدأ من سنة 875هـ وحتى نهاية الحكم المملوكي وبدء الحكم العثماني. بدأ برحلة الأمير يشبك الدوادار التي ألفها محمود بن أجا الحلبي قاضي العسكر في الحملة التي قضت على ثورة شاه سوار في الإمارة الدلغادرية على التخوم الشمالية لبلاد الشام، وقد أجهضت هذه الثورة الدولة المملوكية وأظهرت ضعفها فطمع بها جيرانها، ومهد ذلك للقضاء عليها من قبل السلطان سليم الأول العثماني.
قدم لنا الكتاب سرداً كاملاً للحوادث التي جرت في هذه المدة محللاً بأسلوب شيق جميع الأسباب التي أدت إلى زوال الحكم المملوكي مع وصف فريد للمعارك التي جرت بين المماليك والعثمانيين نقلاً عن أشهر المؤرخين المعاصرين لها.
