هذا الكتاب يتناول بالعرض الموجز تاريخ الدولة العثمانية من الناحيتين السياسية والحضارية، ومن ثم فهو يعمل على إعادة فهم تلك الدولة التي كان لها تاريخها المجيد في العصور الوسطى والحديثة على حد سواء، فلقد نظر المؤرخون الغربيون نظرة عدائية تجاه الدولة العثمانية ولم ينسوا لها دورها الجهادي، ولذا فقد بات علينا أن نتأمل تاريخها وحضارتها التي استمرت نحو سبعة قرون، لكي ندرك جوانب القصور فيها فنتجنب مثيلاتها في عصرنا.
ويلاحظ أن الكتاب يقدم ذلك التاريخ على نحو مبسط يبتعد عن النطاق الأكاديمي، ليقين المؤلف أن الثقافة التاريخية تقوم بدور بارز من أجل إعادة الوعي بالتاريخ، وهو أمر نحن في أشد الحاجة إليه حاليًا وسط التحديات العديدة التي تواجه العالم الإسلامي. والواقع أن إعداد كتاب وجيز عن الدولة العثمانية أمر ليس باليسير، إذ احتاج من مؤلفه البحث في عشرات الكتب والمراجع المتخصصة، من أجل إبرازها للقارئ العربي المثقف على نحو موجز.
