يشير هذا الكتاب إلى المرشد وخصائصه الشخصية وقيمه ودور هذه القيم في تطوير أهداف العلاج ويعرف الكتاب بعض القضايا التي تواجه المعالج المبتدئ ويبين الاحتراق النفسي للمعالج ويهتم بالأخلاق والمسؤولية ومعنى أخلاقية المهنة.
ثم يؤكد على الميثاق الأخلاقي للعاملين في مهن علم النفس في الأردن والقوانين الأخلاقية للجمعية الأمريكية الإرشادية ثم يتكلم عن المبادئ الأخلاقية وأخلاقيات صنع القرار وبعض خطوات صنع القرار ويتناول الكتاب في الفصل الثاني النظرية التحليلية لفرو يد حيث يبدأ بنبذة عن حياة فرويد والمفاهيم الأساسية في النظرية التحليلية والنظرة إلى الطبيعة الإنسانية ومراحل تكوين الشخصية عن الطفل والعملية العلاجية والتحليلية ودورها في الإرشاد.
وفي الفصل الثالث يشير إلى الإرشاد والعلاج الفردي (لإلفرد أدلر) حيث يعرض المفاهيم الأساسية لنظرية إدلر وأنماط وأساليب الحياة والاضطراب في نظر إدلر وأهداف العلاج ونظرة إدلر للطبيعة البشرية ووجهة نظره حول السلوك اللاسوي واللا تكيفي ثم تقيم هذه النظرية وفي الفصل الرابع يقدم العلاج الوجودي (لفراسكل) إذ يضع الافتراضات الأساسية والفلسفة والتصورات وطبيعة الشخصية ومفاهيم أساسية وعملية العلاج وتطور السلوك غير السوي وأهداف الإرشاد والعلاج بالمعنى ومعنى العمل ومعنى الحب وبعض أنماط العلاج الوجودي والتطبيقات الإرشادية للافتراضات الوجودية.
