يعد البحث العلمي هو المنهاج القويم للمعرفة والوصول إلى الحقائق – حيث اعتمد طريقاً لحل مشكلات المجتمع وأساساً للتقدم الحضاري وسعادة البشر. وبالتعريف فإن البحث العلمي هو: "عملية منظمة تتصف بالدقة والموضوعية لجمع البيانات عن موضوع ما، وتحليل هذه البيانات، ومناقشتها، وتفسيرها؛ لغرضٍ من الأغراض". ومعنى ذلك أن منهج البحث هو ما يقوم به الباحث للحصول على نتائج دراسته. من هنا حرص واضعو هذه الدراسة على وضع خطة للعمل تتميز بسلاسة العرض، ومنطقيته، والإكثار من الأمثلة والتطبيقات العملية المتنوعة، لتلبي احتياجات الدارسين على اختلاف مستوياتهم، وقد جاء اهتمامهم بالتطبيقات العملية مسايراً للإتجاهات العالمية في البحث العلمي، التي تنادي بضرورة إدخال المنطق الأمبييقي في ميادين التفكير والبحث العلمي، بعد أن ظلت حيناً من الدهر تنحو نحو التنظير دون الإهتمام بالتطبيق، أو مع اهتمامٍ قليل به. وقد وقع الكتاب في ستة فصول؛ تناول الفصل الأول مفهوم البحث العلمي، وأهدافه، وخصائصه، وطرقه، وعرض الفصل الثاني لطبيعة البحث التربوي، أما الفصل الثالث فكان عنوانه "تصنيف البحوث التربوية" وفيه صنّف الكتّاب البحوث التربوية حسب طبيعة البحث والهدف من إجرائه. وناقش الفصل الرابع أهم أدوات جمع البيانات في البحوث التربوية؛ وهي: الإستبانة، والمقابلة الشخصية، والملاحظة العلمية، والإختبارات، وفي الفصل الخامس تناول المؤلفون الإحصاء الوصفي في البحوث التربوية، وكان الفصل السادس آخر فصول الكتاب، وتناول خطة البحث التربوي، تبعته قائمة المراجع، ثم ختم الكتاب ببعض الملاحق؛ وهي نماذج لبعض أدوات البحث، التي يمكن أن يستفيد الطلاب منها عند إعداد أدوات بحثهم.
