تشتهر برونتي بروايتها مرتفعات ويذرينغ، وهي اخت شارلوت برونتي التي كتبت ( جين اير )، و قد كانت (إميلى) كاتبة متفردة في عصرها جمعت بينها وبين شقيقتيها (آن و شارلوت) برونتي قواسم مشتركة ،حيث تشابهن في نبوغهن الأدبي ، وهزالهن البدني، و قد بدأت إميلى وأختاها شارلوت برونتي وآن برونتي بنسج حكايات عن سكان ممالك خيالية والتأريخ لحياتهم ونضالاتهم.

في الدار التي استأجرها لوكوود في ضيعة الغرانج لزم الفراش محموماً على أثر صدمة عنيفة، وسهرت على راحته السيدة نيللي دين-مدبرة الدار-وفي تلك الساعات الطوال راح يلاحقها بالأسئلة عمّا تخفيه "أعالي ويذريغ" من عجائب وأسرار، وأسعده أن يعلم منها أنها عاشت في جو الأعالي ما يزيد على ثمانية عشر عاماً، وأنها أوثق مصدر لرواية القصة من جميع أطرافها.
بدأت السيدة دين تقص عليه تاريخ حياة هيثكليف، وارث تلك الثروة التي تضمّ الأعالي والمزرعة، وعرف منها أنه طفل غجري لقيط أحضره السيد النبيل إيرنشو في يوم مطير.
