تشتهر برونتي بروايتها مرتفعات ويذرينغ، وهي اخت شارلوت برونتي التي كتبت ( جين اير )، و قد كانت (إميلى) كاتبة متفردة في عصرها جمعت بينها وبين شقيقتيها (آن و شارلوت) برونتي قواسم مشتركة ،حيث تشابهن في نبوغهن الأدبي ، وهزالهن البدني، و قد بدأت إميلى وأختاها شارلوت برونتي وآن برونتي بنسج حكايات عن سكان ممالك خيالية والتأريخ لحياتهم ونضالاتهم.

تقوم شهرة إميلي برونتي على روايتها "مرتفعات وذرنغ" وهي إحدى أغرب القصص في الأدب الإنكليزي وأخصبها خيالاً.
كان لمرتفعات وذرنغ صدى غريب لدى ظهورها، فقد أذهلت إميلي برونتي معاصريها بجو الكتاب القاتم ووقائعه المثيرة. والحقيقة أن الرواية تأسر القارئ وتحرك عواطفه من دون الإسراف في تفاصيل الأحداث الميلودرامية. إنها قصة حب مأساوي جارف حبكت بأسلوب جذاب.
