تشتهر برونتي بروايتها مرتفعات ويذرينغ، وهي اخت شارلوت برونتي التي كتبت ( جين اير )، و قد كانت (إميلى) كاتبة متفردة في عصرها جمعت بينها وبين شقيقتيها (آن و شارلوت) برونتي قواسم مشتركة ،حيث تشابهن في نبوغهن الأدبي ، وهزالهن البدني، و قد بدأت إميلى وأختاها شارلوت برونتي وآن برونتي بنسج حكايات عن سكان ممالك خيالية والتأريخ لحياتهم ونضالاتهم.

رواية تدور حول رياضة مصارعة الثيران وأبطالها من رجال ونساء هوايتهم المفضلة الإهتمام بهذه الرياضة والإعداد لها والإستمتاع بها في الأقطار الثلاثة: إسبانيا، فرنسا، أمريكا مع وصف ساحر لطبيعة تلك البلاد وجمالها وروعتها بأسلوب رائع. يأخذ بالألباب ينقلك إلى الحدث أو ينقل لك الحدث وكـأنك تراه. يتجلى من خلال ذلك الهوة السحيقة التي يتردى فيها المجتمع الغربي في بؤرة الفساد والإنحلال الخلقي والجنسي والأمراض الجنسية بعيداً عن قيود الشرف والفضيلة ومبادئ الفطرة السليمة حيث يسود القلق والعذاب فلا يجد الإنسان مندوحة عن الإدمان على المخدرات والمشروبات وحياة الكباريهات مما يجلب لهم الأمراض الوبيلة والتعاسة والشقاء كمن يتداوى من المرض بالمرض ومن السم بالسم كما يقول الشاعر: المستجير بعمرو عند محنته كالمستجير من الرمضاء بالنار.
