ما من أحد يعرف على وجه الدقة هل مؤلف ملحمة كلكامش ذكر أم أنثى؟ لم لا يكون شاعرة، ففيها من صور الأمومة والضعف الأنثوي ما يعجز عنه الرجل.
أيضاً، ما من أحد يعرف بثقة، هل كانت الملحمة مجموعة من الحكايات المتفرقة، فجمعها شاعر ذو ملكة خاصة، وحبكها حبكاً روائياً ممسرحاً، مع ذلك ما من أحد قرأها، إلا ووقع تحت سحرها العجيب.
قال الشاعر النمساوي الألماني رينر ماريا ريلكه في رسالة له عام 1916: "ملحمة كلكامش مذهلة، اعتبرها من أهم الأمور التي يمكن أن يصادفها الإنسان.. لقد أغرقت نفسي فيها، فخبرت في تلك الكسر الهائلة من الألواح المفخورة أنظمة وأشكالاً تنتسب إلى الأعمال المجودة التي أنتجتها الكلمة الساحرة على طول تاريخها".
ما السر في عظمة هذه الملحمة؟ في تأريخيتها؟ وهي ليست تاريخاً. في خيالاتها الخرافية؟ وهي ليست خرافية. في أسئلتها الفلسفية؟ وهي ليست كتاباً فلسفياً. أم في هذا المزيج العجيب من التاريخ والخرافة والفلسفة. ليكن الأمر كذلك. غير أن التاريخ أو الخرافة أو الفلسفة، لا يكون مؤثراً فنياً إن لم يمر بتقنيات مختلفة، مبتكرة ومتطورة. لا ريب أن مؤلف ملحمة كلكامش شاعر حاذق فتقنياته في صناعة الشعر لا تقل عن تقنيات أي شاعر معاصر عربي أم أجنبي.
وفي هذه المقالات انصب الاهتمام على صناعة الشعرية في النص لا على شرعيته، أو تاريخيته أو كهنوتيته أو جغرافيته، لأنها خارجة عنه وإن بدت ملتصقة به أو مندمجة فيه.
وكان المؤلف حريصاً منذ البداية أن يجيب عن كيفية القول لا عن دوافعه، عن تأثيره لا عن شرعيته، بكلمات أخرى، كان الهم الأول والأخير أن يكشف عن موهبة الشاعر في التأليف قدر المستطاع: كيف كتب مثلاً رثاء كلكامش لأنكيدو؟ كيف صور الطوفان وما هي الأدوات والأجهزة التي استعملها؟ كيف صور الخوف، كيف صور خيبة الإنسان التامة.
