والموضوع الذي يتناوله هذا الكتاب يوضح نظرة الإسلام إلى العلم – بصفة عامة – ثم بيان الأثر العظيم الذي بثه الإسلام في نفوس أتباعه، من خلال الدعوة الواضحة للقرآن الكريم والسنة النبوية لطالب العلم والحث عليه، وإعمال العقل للتفكر فيما فيه صالح الناس جميعاً. مع توضيح أن الإسلام شكّل قوة الدفع الحقيقية لطلب العلم. كذلك يتحدث الكتاب عن كيفية استيعاب الحضارة الإسلامية للإنتاج المعرفي للأمم السابقة، وكيفية التعامل الإيجابي مع هذا الإنتاج، والتعامل معه، والإفادة منه، وذلك من خلال ترجمة كتب الأمم السابقة التي وصلت إليها أيدي المسلمين إلى اللغة العربية. كذلك يتركز الحديث في هذا الكتاب حول نشأة العلوم الإسلامية والعلوم العربية، تلك العلوم التي شكلت العقلية الإسلامية التي آمنت بالله رباً وبالإسلام ديناً، وبمحمد (ص) نبياً ورسولاً.
ثم كان الحديث بعد ذلك عن العلوم الطبيعة بصفة عامة، وما أضافه المسلمون إلى هذه العلوم، وأبرز علماء الإسلام، ومؤلفاتهم وابتكاراتهم في الميادين العلمية.
أما في مجال الفنون الإسلامية، فقد أوضح الكتاب نظرة الإسلام إلى الفن بصفة عامة. ثم بيان إبتكار المسلمين في ألوان الفنون الهادفة، في ميادين الآداب الرفيعة، والعمارة الإسلامية والزخرفة والنحت، والخطوط ... إلى آخر ذلك من آثار للعلوم والفنون الإسلامية في نهضة أوروبا.
