إن ظهور هذا الكتاب يعني كشفاً لشخصية نحوية يمانية لم تُعرف، وإماطة اللثام عن كتاب مؤلف في باب الخلاف النحوي، وأسلوب التأليف في النحو عند نحاة اليمن. يقع الكتاب في ثلاث وعشرين ومئتي مسألة رتبها المصنف على أقسام الكلمة: الاسم والفعل، والحرف، وكانت حصة الاسم اثنين وثلاثين ومئة، وحصة الفعل خمساً وثلاثين، وحصة الحرف ستاً وخمسين، وبهذا تكون زيادته على الإنصاف بمسألة ومئة عدّاً، غير ما أغفله من مسائل الإنصاف، وأحلّ محله مسائل أخرى.
ولقد أفاد مباشرة من الإنصاف على سبيل من الإيجاز حتى لينقل عبارته أحياناً حرفاً بحرف، ويتابع "الانباري" في حلّ موافقاته أو مخالفاته للكوفيين والبصريين. كما أفاد من كتب ابن بابشاذ وابن هشام وسواهما كثيراً.
والكتاب موجز لا يميل مؤلفه فيه إلى الإطالة والإكثار من العلل والشواهد، وإن كان منحاه مع البصريين، وكثيراً ما يرد مع الكوفيين بعبارات فيها شيء من الغلظة. أما منهج المحقق فقد تجلى في ضبطه للنصوص، وتخريجه للشواهد من الشعر والآيات والأحاديث، محاولاً قدر المستطاع إرجاع المسائل إلى أصولها أو إلى نظائرها.
