يكتب "خالد المعالي" منطلقاً من تجربة الألم الذي لا يطاق، والذي لا يمكن تهدئته إلا بالوهم، وهذا الأخير –كما راه- أقصى طاقة للحلم، وهكذا تدور قصائد المجموعة بين قطبي الألم- الوهم، وما بينهما الحياة بكل ما فيها من الذي كان ولم يكن، وهكذا أيضاً لا يمكن قراءتها بمعزل عما عاشه الشاعر، ثم تحوَل تجربة، وبالتالي لا يمكن قراءتها بمعزل عما كتبه سابقاً، فهو امتداد لرحلة اللاشيء، لرحلة اللاجدوى: اللاشئ العظيم، واللاجدوى المحفزَة التي تستنفر فينا أقصى طاقة للتواصل معها، هذه الحياة، التي ليست لنا أبداً.
نقرأ له قصيدة بعنوان "عسى أن ينطلق الصمت": "تنازل نفسك ليلاً، وفي النهار تنهض، لكي تركن الذكريات جانباً/ أين ضعت؟ وكيف سار الزمان بك ببطء؟ كنت ترعى حياة/ لم تكن لك، الشباك مغلقٌ، الضبابُ يلفَ كلَ الفراغ على النهر/ الماء يسير ببطء، والليل الذي فيك يحلَ نهاراً، فتأسى، حقاً/ ترى سيرة الدنيا، لم تعد تباع بقرشٍ، ترى الذي كان، الذي حلَ، الذي صار، ويصير، الدخان.. ثم تعود لتجلس إلى نفسك، عسى أن يأتي الحرف إليها، عسى أن ينطق الصمت".
