هذا القاموس في قسمه الأول كتاب جامع لمفردات اللغة التي يتكلم بها الشعب بلسانه الدارج في واقعه الحي أو في حياته اليومية، مرتبة حسب الموضوعات وفق الترتيب الألفبائي، مع شرح كل نصطلح حسب استعمال أهله والمختصين به، وضبطه بالشكل مع الإشارة إلى طرق نطقه المختلفة ومشتقاته، وإرجاعه إلى أصوله التي أخذ منها، ومعارضة العامي منه والدخيل بالفصيح من كلام العرب.
وقد بلغت أبوابه ما يزيد على ثلاثين باباً، شملت ما يناهز4500 كلمة أو مصطلح شعبي تجمع ألفاظ الحياة الدائرة على ألسنة العامة في البيت والشارع والسوق والمصنع والورشة والحقل، وما يتعلق بجسد الإنسان وأمراضه وبالمساكن والأزياء والأطعمة والأدوات المنزلية والآلات الزراعية، والتسميات المحلية لكل فصل أو طقس أو احتفال أو ممارسة.
وهو في القسم الثاني منه يتناول تراكيب العامة وعباراتهم الاصطلاحية التي يأتون بها في تضاعيف كلامها وفي أحاديثهم المعتادة ليدلوا بها على معان خاصة لم تكن لها في أصل وضعها اللغوي، أو لم تعرفها العربية من قبل لهذه المعاني. والمؤلف ليس ممن يدرسون العامية من أجل العامية ذاتها، وإنما من أجل التعرف إلى أصولها وخصائصها وتراكيبها كظواهر لغوية قائمة والاستفادة منها في إنماء الفصحى وإغنائها بالكلام المولد والتعابير الجديدة الجارية على الألسنة استجابة لقرارات المجامع اللغوية الواضحة في هذا الصدد.
وللكتاب أهداف أخرى تتجاوز علوم اللغة إلى العلوم الإنسانية والاجتماعية بإتاحته من خلال شرح مادية الكشف عن أحوال الناس ومعتقداتهم وعاداتهم وتقاليدهم الشعبية، مما يؤهله بحق ليكون من معاجم الفولكلور إلى جانب كونه من معاجم اللغة.
