يدرس هذا الكتاب المسار التطوري لفلسفة التاريخ عند عدد من مفكري وفلاسفة الغرب والشرق. القدماء والحديثيين وذلك بهدف معرفة: إلى أي مدى تمكنت المناهج الحديثة من إخراج جهد الكتابة التاريخية من إطارها الإخباري والوصفي والسردي إلى مستوى العلم الذي يربط الوعي الإنساني بحركة الحياة عموماً؟
ولما كانت قضية قراءة النصوص التاريخية إحدى أهم مرتكزات البحث التاريخي عند المؤرخ، اعتبرت مؤلفة الكتاب أنه من الضروري للمؤرخ أن يمون قارئاً بارعاً للنصوص التاريخية؛ ولا سيما –إننا أصبحنا إلى حدٍ ما قادرين وبفضل علماء الألسنيات على التمييز بين المعنى الحرفي الملاصق لخطاب ما؛ وبين ىثار المعنى المتولد عن قراءته؛ وقد يفهم القراء إيحاءات وأشياء في النص لم يكن يقصدها المؤلف؛ بل لم يكن يفكر بها أصلاً؛ وهذا أمر يعرفه القراء المتمنعون.
وفي هذا الصدد تورد مؤلفه الكتاب رأي المدارس على اختلاف تفسيراتها للحركة التاريخية ويحلَل وتناقش هذه النظريات وتحثَ على ضرورة التجرد التام من الأهداف والغايات الذاتية أو الإنسياق للهيمنة المدرسية وضرورة الابتعاد عن أي تصنيف عقائدي أو سياسي أو قومي؛ كل ذلك بغية تطويع الفعل التاريخي لما يخدم الفعل الإنساني، ويجعل التاريخ مساق لخدمة الإنسان وتطلعاته.
