عادة ما تحقق الرواية، لرغبة الإنتصار للذاكرة الجماعية، عبر تثبيتها في تنويعات مجازية عديدة، وعلائق شكلية وموضوعية مختلفة، ولأن ذاكرة اللبنانيين لا تنسى أيام "الحصار الرهيب في السهل" أراد الروائي سمير الحاج شاهين البحث عن ذلك التواصل بين الماضي والحاضر عبر تقنية الفن الروائي، والغاية السعي إلى بناء هوية إنسانية متعالية على الجراح وسوء الفهم بين الإنتماءات المختلفة.
في الرواية عودة إلى أيام الطفولة في "وادي المروج"... المكان الروائي، لمواطن لبناني اغترب عن أرضه "أنا مشغوف بعمري... محظوظ أنا على كل هذه الطفولة السعيدة التي أمضيتها في "وادي المروج"، هذا الشاب المتيم بأرضه يبدو أنه استشهد في سبيلها، إذ كان هناك عرض: إما تدميرها بكاملها، وإما تسليمه فديةً عنها، فآثر الوقوع في الآسر، رغم إيمانه ببراءته، كي يوفر الموت على الأطفال، وهاجم البغاة يسوقونه إلى المحاكمة بمواكبة عيون أبناء عشيرته الدامعة، ومن السجن ها هم يقتادونه إلى منصة الإعدام، حيث كان طلبه الأخير أن ترسل جثته إلى مسقط رأسه ليدفن فيها.
في الخطاب الروائي، إعلاءٌ لمفهوم الشهادة والدفاع عن الأرض، حيث يحضر في الرواية أسماء لشهداء، رووا بدمائهم أرض الوطن، وصور من ذاكرة الحرب بين مناطق مختلفة ودور الجيش في إخماد الفتنة "وانظر من جهة الشارع العام ملاَّلات قوى الأمن الداخلي المزدانة بالأعلام اللبنانية، وسيارات جيب عسكرية؛ ناقلات جنود نظاميين، وشاحنات مكتظة بعناصر من "لواء المروج" يلوّحون للجماهير المصطفة عن الميلين، تصفق لهم بحماس، وكأنهم فرقة الإنقاذ...".
"الحصار الرهيب في السهل" هي حكاية من حكايات الحرب، أبطالها شهداء أحياء في ذاكرة الروائي سمير الحاج شاهين، أعادهم إلى الذاكرة برواية هي أقرب إلى ملحمة روائية تاريخية ترى الحاضر في عيون الماضي.
