هذا الكتاب إضافة علمية منهجية ثرية من قلم الأستاذ المحقق المدقق الشارح لمكنونات التراث العربي الإسلامي، الأستاذ البحاثة عبد القادر أحمد عبد القادر الذي يصل نهاره بليله في البحث والتنقيب. تعتز "دار الوثائق" بتقديم هذه الدراسة الجادة العربية الإسلامية، والساعين لحل مشكلات فهرسة المخطوطات وتصنيفها ووضع القواعد والحلول لها.
وبالعودة لمتن الكتاب نجده قد قسم إلى أربعة أوباب نتناول في الباب الأول تاريخ المكتبات في العالم منذ بدء الخليقة أو ما قبل الميلاد، والمكتبات الأوروبية، والمكتبات عند المسلمين وفهارسها، وأنواع هذه الفهارس، ونعرض لأزائل فهارس المخطوطات في أوروبا، وأوائل الفهارس في العصر الحديث.
ونتناول في الباب الثاني المخطوط العربي، تعريفاً للمصطلح، وتكوناً من حيث الملامح المادية له، من حيث الورق، والمداد، والخط، والزخرفة، ومن حيث المضمون، من صفحة العنوان وما كتب عليها، إلى مقدمة المؤلف وديباجته، إلى خاتمة المخطوط، سواء أكتبها المؤلف أن الناسخ، وأهمية كل ملمح من هذه الملامح للمفهرس وما يجده من معلومات في كل منها، كما تناول بالتفصيل التقييدات المسجلة على المخطوطات.
ونتناول في الباب الثالث فهرسة المخطوطات وتصنيفها، عارضين فيه أولاً معنى كلمة فهرسة وتطورها، وبعد ذلك نتناول بالتفصيل المتطلبات العلمية والعملية التي ينبغي أن يتقنها كل من يتصدى للقيام بعملية الفهرسة، وبعض الملاحظات المهمة التي يجب على المفهرس أن يضعها بعين الاهتمام، ونعرض بعد ذلك لبطاقة الفهرسة كنموذج كامل لما ينبغي أن تحتويه من عناصر تفيد الباحث، ونعرف كل عنصر من عناصرها، ورأينا أن نوضح بعد ذلك حساب الجمل المشرقي والمغربي. ثم نتناول معنى التصنيف لغة واصطلاحاً.
ونتناول في الباب الرابع العملية التنفيذية لملء عناصر بطاقة الفهرس عنصراً عنصراً ضاربين أمثلة حية من الواقع العملي للمخطوطات التي قمنا بفهرستها، واضعين من خلال ذلك القواعد التي استنتجناها من خلال تلك المخطوطات. ثم نتبع كل ذلك بملاحق تتضمن نماذج من أنواع الخطوط ومن صور المخطوطات.
