اللغة وسيلة الأدب وأداته، ولم يبدع أحد في فن من فنون الأدب ما لم يأخذ بناصية اللغة ويتمكن منها، وقد أدرك اللغويون هذه الحقيقة، فكانت لهم وقفات طويلة في النقد اللغوي، الذي لا يمكن أن نعده موضوعاً أدبياً وإن كان هو معيار جودة النص الأدبي؛ لأنه تصدى لقضايا لغوية، وكان المتصدون لغويين، ففي النقد اللغوي حياة العربية، إذ هو يجليها، فيميز خبيثها من طيبها، ومعوجها من مستقيمها، وغامضها من جليها، وقريبها من بعيدها.
ولابن جني جهود لا تغفل في الدرس العربي، فهو قد امتلك عقلية فذة من طراز عقلية الخليل، لذا تناول المحدثون مصنفاته بالدرس والتحليل، فجاء أكثر نتاجهم في رسائل جامعية، منها: (ابن جني وعلم الدلالة)، (والدراسات اللهجية والصوتية عند ابن جني)، (وابن جني النحوي)، (وأصول النحو في الخصائص لابن جني)، (والخصائص لابن جني دراسة وتحليل)، (والتوجيه الصوتي والصرفي للقراءات الشاذة في كتاب المحتسب)، (والدراسات الصرفية عند ابن جني)، (وابن جني بلاغياً)، ومع هذا الإلتفات الشديد نحو ابن جني وتراثه، غفل الباحثون عن دراسته ناقداً لغوياً، لذا وجدته موضوعاً يسد نقصاً ويردم هوة.
وقد استدعت طبيعة البحث أن يكون في بابين، تناولت في (الأول) قضايا نقدية عامة عند ابن جني، وقد تضمن ثلاثة فصول، درست في الأول نقده الرواية، في الثاني نقده العلماء، وفي الثالث الضرورة الشعرية عنده، أما (الباب الثاني) فقد تناولت فيه النقد التطبيقي عند ابن جني، وهو في فصلين، (الأول): نقده الألفاظ، (والآخر): نقده النحو.
وقد نهلت مصادر البحث من منهلين، (أحدهما): كتب ابن جني، وقد تفاوتت حجم المادة النقدية المستخرجة منها، ولذلك رتبتها بحسب ما أفدت منها: 1-الخصائص، تحقيق محمد علي النجار، ط2، دار الهدى، بيروت - لبنان، وقد حققه أيضاً عبد الحكيم بن محمد، طبعة المكتبة التوفيقية، مصر لات.
