يمُثِّل كتاب العين ظاهرة مهمة في تاريخ المعجم العربيِّ، إذ على الرَّغُمِ من إعتماد أغلبِ المعجماتِ عليه، ونقلِها لمادَّتِهِ، تشكَّكَ فيه المُتَشكِّكُون، وتحامَلَ عليه المتحاملون، واختلفتْ فيه الآراء إختلافاً، وتعددتْ فيه الأقوال تعَدُّداً، ونُسِبَ إلى الخطأ والإضطراب والتَّصحيف، وأُلِّفَتْ كتبٌ عديدةٌ في نَقْدِهِ والإستدراكِ عليه، وكتبٌ أخرى في الرَّدِّ على تلك الكتبِ، وأصبح الكتابُ مشكلةً من مشكلات المعجم العربيِّ خاضفيها كثيرٌ من الدارسين.
من هنا، فهذا الكتاب محاولةً تهدف إلى سبر أغوار الكتاب، والكشفِ عن حقيقةِ النقدِ المُوَجَّهِ إليه من خلال دراسةٍ تطبيقيةٍ مقارئةٍ للنصوص والألفاظِ التي وردت فيه.
