يشكّل كتاب " مسالك القول في النقد اللغوي " مرجعاً مهماً في بابه منذ عصر الأقدمين وإلى اليوم ، إذ وقف مؤلفه " صلاح الدين الزعبلاوي " في كل موضوع من موضوعاته : قواعد اللغة والنحو والبلاغة والإعراب وأوجه القياس والسماع والتضمين ( المرسل ) والصفات مبناها ومعناها ، وغيرها بهدف العمل على ما يمكن أن يشكل ضابطاً أو يتخذ معياراً في باب من أبواب النقد اللغوي ، للفصل بين الخطأ والصواب ، أو قاعدة يجدر أن تُسن ، للتبصير بصحيح القول وتمييزه عن فاسده ، في باب أو مجال فأورد على كل ضابط ( معيار ) توخاه أو قاعدة ابتغاها نصوصاً صريحة وحججاً واضحة للبرهان ، وفي هذا يقول : " وقد كان عليّ أن آتي بأمثلة من ( التعبير ) في كل فصل ، فأعرضها على ما رسمته من ضابط أو قاعدة لأجري الحكم فيها ، على وفق حدّ الضابط أو القاعدة ، فإذا هي استقامت على منهج هذا الحد فطابقته ونزعت إليه ، دل ذلك على صحتها وموافقتها للصواب ، ولو ذهب النقاد إلى عيبها وتلحينها ، وإذا خالفته فلم تقتس به ولا استنت بسننه ، فقد دلّ هذا على سُقمها وضعفها ، وأوجب القول بامتناعها والإفتاء بفسادها ، ولو قال النقاد بسدادها واستقامتها ... " . على وفق هذه القاعدة يشتغل مؤلف الكتاب فيذكر ما يكون معياراً للحكم على الخطأ والصواب فيما انتهجه الأقدمون والمحدثون من نحاة ولغويين في ( النقد اللغوي ) عند التأليف والحكم والتقدير ، وما عوّلوا عليه طريقاً للقطع بالجواز والإمتناع ، وما استنوا به ضابطاً للتخطئة والتصويب ، وكل ذلك بهدف معرفة صحيح الكلام من فاسده في قولهم بالتصويب والتلحين .
