يعتني هذا الكتاب بالقيمة الفنية والجمالية لشعر عصر صدر الإسلام عامة وشعر الفتوحات الإسلامية خاصةً وذلك لقلة الدراسات التي اعتنت بقيمة هذا الشعر الفنية، والذي ينتمي إلى أخصب عصر من عصور الأدب العربي الذي لم ينصفه الباحثون.
فضلاً عن أنه يكشف جانباً مشرقاً من جوانب عصورنا الخالدة، إلا وهو عصر الرسالة النبوية والخلفاء الراشدين، ذلك العصر الذي برهن للعالم أجمع كيفية تحمل المسؤولية الخاصة بالأمة الإسلامية على عاتقه، ونشر الرسالة السماوية وتبليغها لأكبر نطاق ممكن من البشر.
وقد اقتضى البحث أن يعقد أربعة فصول بعد مقدمة بينت ما شرع البحث لدراسته في فصوله الأربع: ففي الفصل الأول تناول المؤلف لغة الشعر عامة وعقد مقارنة بينها وبين لغة النثر، ثم تناول لغة الشعر عند الشعراء الفاتحين من خلال دراسة الألفاظ والتراكيب ومن ثم المعاني والأفكار الواردة في شعرهم.
أما في الفصل الثاني: فتناول الصورة الشعرية، مفهومها، وظيفتها في النقد العربي القديم والحديث، وبعد ذلك تناول الصورة البيانية عند شعرائنا الفاتحين، لكونها من أكثر الأساليب التي لجؤوا إليها في تصويراتهم، أما في الفصل الثالث: فتناول الموسيقى الشعرية، مفهومها، وظيفتها، ثم قسم المؤلف متفقاً مع النقد الحديث إلى موسيقى خارجية، ثم تناول القسم الآخر من الموسيقى وهو الموسيقى الداخلية.
أما في الفصل الرابع فتناول بعض الخصائص الفنية الأخرى التي اتسم بها شعر الفاتحين ومنها: البناء الفني لقصيدة الفاتحين مقارنة مع البناء الفني القديم، وكذلك تناول ظاهرة شيوع المقطوعات الشعرية وبيان سبب ذلك الشيوع والملفت لنظر والإنتباه، ثم تناول القصة وبين أنها كشفت عن عمق الحالة العاطفية التي يمر بها الشاعر وهو في ساحة المعركة، ثم تناول الواقعية التي حرص عليها شاعر الفتوح والتي ألزمته على النقل السليم والأمين للأحداث، وبعد ذلك كشف عن مسايرة هذا الشعر الجاهدي لأحداث المعارك والفتوحات والذي لم يتخلَّ عن نقل أي صغيرة أو كبيرة طالت أم قصرت.
