لا يخفى أن البحث اللغوي إما أن يكون في جانب اللفظ طلباً للمعنى، وهو في الغالب شأن العامة والمستفيدين وأصحاب التفاسير والشروح، وإما أن يكون في جانب المعنى طلباً للفظ، وهو غرض الكتّاب والمترسلين وأصحاب الإملاء والتعريب.
في هذا الكتاب يبحث إبراهيم ناصيف اليازجي في أصل اللغة ومذاهبها وأسرارها وكيفية تأدية معانيها عند مختلف الحضارات الإنسانية.
وفي هذا السياق يسلط المؤلف الضوء على اللغات السامية من خلال ما ورد في الكتب المعتبرة التي بحثت في هذا الحقل، مثل ما صرّح به الإمام البيضاوي في تفسيره المشهور، وما أشار إليه الفيومي في "المصباح" ومن جرى على إصطلاحه من كتب اللغة، وما درج عليه الأعاجم فيما جمعوه من كتب اللغة كـ "فريتغ" ومن حذا حذوه. أما عن وضع اللغة اليوم فيقول: "ولا يخفى أن اللغة اليوم قد أصبحت كأنها لغة قوم آخرين، لذهابها من الألسنة من عهد عَهيد، وإبداعها بين ألواح من المصاحف لا تبدئ ولا تعيد، فما سعى الدارس أن يحفظ من تلك المفردات المشتتة والمعاني الجزئية التي يعقم بها الذهن ويضيف من دونها الذكر؟
