يعني البحث تقصي مكثف ومعمق وهادف لمعرفة وتفهم ظاهرة أو مشكلة أو قضية إجتماعي قائمة وسائدة فعلاً في نبض الحياة الإجتماعية.
بمعنى آخر، أنه نهج لإكتشاف قيم حقيقية بطرق علمية وموضوعية يغوص في بحور الحقائق لإستخراج أسرارها ومسبباتها وآثارها.
فضلاً عن بحثه عن إجابات لأسئلة حول ما يدور في فلك المجتمع وما يصيب جسده من تقرحات وأمراض تفتك به، أعني أنه مجسّة تشخيصية وعلاجية في الآن، ومكتشف لحقائق جديدة، ومختبر لوقائع قديمة ومحلل لتبعياتها للعلاقات المتداخلة عبر التحليل السببي المستقى من الإطار النظري، بذات الوقت هو منمي ومطور لأدوات علمية ونظريات إجتماعية ذات مصدقية في دراسة السلوك البشري.
لا ريب إذن من القول بأنه يبلور وينمي المعرفة الإجتماعية في دراسته العلمية للحياة الإجتماعية من أجل إسعاد ورفاهية الناس، كل ذلك يؤدي إلى التوجه نحو مشكلات الإجتماعية بالدرجة الأساس ليصل إلى تعميمات ومبادئ نظرية تساعده على قراءة مستقبل عيش المجتمع، لذا يمكن القول بأن أهميته تتجلى في الحسابات العلمية والتفكير الإستدلالي وتقديم أفكار جديدة وعميقة ليرقى في تطور العادات المنطقية للتفكير المنظم مساعداً بذلك صياغة سياسات جديدة ويعالج مشكلات متعددة الإرتباطات بالشأن الإقتصادي والسياسي والإداري من أجل تحسين مستوى عيش الناس.
ومن نافلة القول أنه يرصد الأحداث بدقة ويصفها من خلال جمع معلمات جديدة يحصل عليها من مصادرها الأصلية مستخدماً في نفس الوقت معلومات قائمة أساساً من أجل تحقيق أهداف جديدة يقوم بها باحثين متمرسين في البحث الإجتماعي يستخدموا تحليل شديد الدقة طارحاً أسئلة تتطلب إجابات صميمية وموضوعية يسجلها في خلاصته ذات الأهمية القديرة.
