يحتوي هذا الكتاب على بحث أعده معن خليل العمر وتحدث فيه عن علم اجتماع الفن وذلك من خلال ستة فصول، خصص أولها للحديث عن الخلفية التاريخية لتطور الفن عبر المجتمعات الإنسانية مبرزاً الطابع الاجتماعي للموسيقى ومقدماً شرحاً وافياً لنسق الأغنية العربية، ثم في الفصل الثاني عند إلى طرح المراحل الاجتماعية التي مر منها النسق الفني عبر التاريخ. وعالج في الفصل الثالث الإطار الاجتماعي للفن مجيباً على تساؤل مفاده، لماذا ندرس علم اجتماع الفن.
ووضح في الفصل الرابع كيف ينشئ الفنان اجتماعياً وفنياً في الأسرة والمدرسة والمجتمع المحلي، وما هي ملتقياته وما هو اعتباره الاجتماعي. أما في الفصل الخامس فقد اكتفى بالتميز بين العلم والفن والعالم والفنان ومناقشة ذلك, وأخيراً أوضح في الفصل السادس المفاهيم المتداولة في ميدان الفن والمنهج الذي تتبعه دراسات الفن والنظريات الاجتماعية التي تناولت موضوع الفن وتعاملت معه ليس بشكل مستقل بل ضمن طرحها نظريات اجتماعية عامة، وهذا يؤكد عدم تخصيص علماء الاجتماع مساحة خاصة به، بل تناوله ضمناً وليس مستقلاً خاصاً فريداً.
