يتناول الدراسة النقدية لشعر عبيد الله بن الحر الجعفي الشاعر الفارس الذي عاش إبان الحقبة الدامية من بداية العهد الأموي، حيث شهدت الدولة العربية الإسلامية اضطرابات كثيرة، وانقسامات سياسية حادة، وظروفاً عامة خطيرة، تجلت في ظهور الحركات الاستقلالية المتمثلة بحركة عبد الله بن الزبير في الحجاز وأخيه مصعب في العراق، التي هدفت الى تثبيت الأرستقراطية القرشية في السلطة، وقيام حركة المختار الثقفي الشيعية التي نادت بإعادة الخلافة إلى علي بن أبي طالب كرم الله وجهه، ودعت الى قتال الأمويين الذين اغتصبوا الخلافة من الطالبيين، فضلاً عن حركة الخوارج الذين رفضوا كل سلطة لا تقيم شرع الله وحده.
كما شهدت هذه المرحلة بروز نزعات الموالي التي اتصفت فيما بعد بالشعوبية السياسية والدينية المعادية للعروبة والإسلام. كما نشطت حركة الصعاليك في هذه الحقبة وقد كانت امتداداً لتلك التي ظهرت في الجاهلية.
وأهم ما تناول الكتاب: ابن الحر بين نشوة النصر وسياط الندم، أنغامه الشعرية الأخرى، الخصائص الفنية في شعر ابن الحر ونتائج البحث.
