اختلف في اسم هذا الشاعر ولكن مصادر ترجمته اتفقت على كنيته "أبو ليلى" ولقبه "النابغة". وأما سبب تلقيبه بالنابغة فقيل "كان يقول الشعر، ثم تركه في الجاهلية، ثم عاد إليه بعد أن أسلم، فقيل: نبغ". وقد برع وأجاد في جميع الأغراض الشعرية المدح والهجاء والفخر والوصف والحكم، وقد اشتهر عنه أنه أنشد النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم أبياتاً فدعا له النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم أن لا يفض الله فاه، فكان من أحسن الناس ثغراً. كان النابغة شاعراً مغلباً إلا أنه كان إذا هاجى غُلِبْ. وفي هذا الكتاب يعيد المحقق جمع شعر النابغة الجعدي مضيفاً إلى عمل من سبقوه مقطوعات من شعره، راجعاً في ذلك إلى عدد من المصادر التي توفرت له.
