يحوي هذا الكتاب نحو ثمانين قصيدة لثلاثين شاعراً وشاعرة من مختلف نواحي الهند كتبت في الأصل بلغات مختلفة هي: الهندية، البنغالية، الأسامية، التلجو، إلى جانب الفارسية و الإنكليزية وقد ترجمها المترجم عن الترجمات إنكليزية.
وفيما عدا ميرزا غالب الذي ينتمي إلى القرن التاسع عشر وطاغور الذي عاش بين 1761 و 1941 فقد ولد بقية الشعراء والشاعرات في المجموعة خلال النصف الأول من القرن العشرين باستثناء خمسة ولدوا في النصف الثاني من القرن الماضي، ومعظم الشعراء والشاعرات في المجموعة من الأسماء المعروفة في العالم الشعر في الهند. ومواضيع القصائد متنوعة تغطي طيفاً واسعاً وتغلب عليها القضايا الإنسانية.
