إن التاريخ كمعطى أنطولوجي من أكبر الموضوعات المتقاطعة مع الذات الإنسانية، بل التاريخ هو إطار تحقق هذه الذات، وإذا كان علماء التاريخ يعتبرون أن الإنسان هو صانع الحدث التاريخي؛ فإن الفلاسفة محور إشتغالهم الرئيس هو الإنسان ككائن صانع للتاريخ في هذا الوجود، ولأن الفلسفة تهتم بالتاريخ لكن من منظور مغاير لموضوعات علم التاريخ، في هذا المنظور يزود التاريخُ الفلسفة بالمادة الخام التي تؤسس عليها رؤيتها للتاريخ الإنساني.
ولأن فلاسفة التاريخ مهتمين بتأويل الماضي وأحداثه التاريخية، ويحوّلون التاريخ إلى موضوع للإشتغال الفلسفي في سعيهم الحثيث إلى بلورة نماذج فلسفية تفسيرية للتاريخ الإنساني، ففلاسفة التاريخ لا يسعون إلى دراسة الوقائع والأحداث التفصيلية كما يفعل المؤرخون؛ إنما يسعون إلى تقديم فهم شمولي للتاريخ الإنساني ومحاولة تأويله تأويلاً عقلانياً، وتأويلاً يضع الذات الإنسانية في مواجهة مصيرها المحتوم في هذا الوجود، والكشف عن المحرك الرئيس للتاريخ، والسعي إلى صياغة قوانين تفسر مسار التاريخ الإنساني.
تأتي هذه الدراسة، من مركز نماء، يطرح فيها المؤلف عرضاً للعديد من النظريات، والنماذج الفلسفية التي سعت إلى تفسير التاريخ الإنساني، يأتي في مقدمتها نظرية العناية الإلهية، ثم تلتها نظريات عديدة في الفكر الغربي المعاصر، كنظرية التقدم، ثم أعقبتها نظرية التعاقب الدوري للحضارات، وغيرها من النماذج التفسيرية، إنتهاء بنماذج تفسيرية قدمتها قرائح عربية.
إن الوعي بالنماذج التفسيرية التي ولّدتها العقول البشرية على مرّ العصور هو من ضرورات الوعي بمسار التطور الإنساني ونشاطاته العقلية؛ إذ من المهم في طريق تطوير العقل الشرعي تحقيق أعلى درجات الوعي الزماني والمكاني والكيفي للحضارات المتعاقبة.
