تحتوي قصة الأب غوريو، كما قصص بلزاك في معظمها على عدد من "اللآلئ"، بالإضافة إلى كثير من المقاطع الهزلية، والدامعة، حيث نجد رائداً جريئاً، ومغامراً أديباً كبيراً، يكشف لنا بومضات شعرية ساطعة، عما أوحى إليه الحدث، وزودته به الملاحظة. عرف هذا الساخر أن يبين لنا، أفضل مما يبين لنا المؤلفون الذين يقال عنهم إنهم "قدوة"، دخائل الإنسان، وكيف أن موقفاً حرجاً يستطيع أن يبث، مؤقتاً، في أحقر الناس "صفات النخبة". على نور هذه العبقرية، تبدو لنا الوجوه الكامدة، أو البالية التي يحملها نزلاء فندق فوكه "كصفحات النقود الملغاة". يتضمن هذا البلى القيمة الأولية، والتمام الأصلي. الحياة لا تتجزأ: فإما أن نقدرها في محاسنها ومساوئها معاً، وإما أن نتخلى عن تقديرها. هكذا يجب أن نسلك تجاه آثار بلزاك في وثوبها المتدفق، وفي سواقيها الكدرة. كان بودلير أول من اعترف بعظمة معاصرة. ولنختم هنا بما قاله شاعر أزهار الشر مقرظاً خليلته: "إني أحب ذوقها الرديء".
إنك يا آنسة تعتقدين بأنك متأكدة من قلبك اليوم ولكن هل تضمنين عدم تبدله؟ فمرت ابتسامة حائرة على شفاه الفتاة المسكينة وقد خرجت من ثنايا روحها لتضيء وجهها لدرجة فزع اوجين من اثارة شعورها بصورة قوية فسألها: ما هو قولك؟ لنفرض أنك غداً ستصبحين غنية وسعيدة وأن ثروة كبيرة تهبط عليك من السماء بدون سابق انذار فهل ستظلين وفية محبة للشاب الفقير الذي أعجبت به في أيام الصيف الذي مر بك؟ فأومأت له بحركة جميلة من رأسها, شاب تعيس جداً, غيماءة جديدة. فصرخت به مدام فوكر! ما هي هذه الحماقات التي تقولها فأجاب أوجين دعينا فنحن متفاهمان. ظهرت فوترات بغتة على بوابة غرفة السفرة وقال وهو يسال بصوته الخشن... إذاً هناك مشروع زواج بين السيد الفارس أوجين دي راستنباك والآنسة فيكتورين ثاليفر؟.
