"المجمع المسكوني الأول"، "مجمع الآباء الثلاثمائة والثمانية عشر"، "مجمع دستور الإيمان"، كلها تسميات للمسمى ذاته، ألا وهو مجمع نيقيا المنعقد عام 325، فكان أول مجمع كنسي على المستوى العالمي أو الدولي، حيث تمثلت الكنيسة بمختلف فروعها، وشكل هذا مجمع نقطة تحول هامة في مسار الكنيسة اللاهوتي والعقائدي، ودعامة لوحدتها.
يروي الكتاب هذا الحدث الضخم بكل تفاصيله وثناياه، فيتحدث عن الخلافات الحاصلة آنذاك في قلب الكنيسة الجريح، الخارجة لتوها من الاضطهادات: نشوب النواع الآريوسي في مصر والبلبلة الذي أنتجته في الوسط الكنيسة (أنكر ألوهية المسيح)، والخلاف الناجم عن تحديد يوم عيد الفصح، وأسباب أخرى أقل شأناً دفعت الإمبراطور قسطنطين الكبير، أول الملوك المسيحيينن إلى دعوة أسافقة العالم حوله، لحسم القضايا المتنازع عليها، ثم يسود الكتاب كل ما جرى في المجمع، وما أقر فيه: دستور إيمان واحد قويم العقيدة، لا زالت الكنيسة الجامعة تعترف به حتى اليوم، وحرم العقائد الخاطئة، وتوافق الآباء على تحديد يوم موحد لعيد الفصح، ومواضيع أخرى تهم الكنيسة في نظامها وإدارتها (كواقع امتيازات الكراسي الرسولية: روما والإسكندرية وأنطاكية، وعزوبية الكهنة...).
ويختم هذا المجلد، ملحق وثائقي يحيو أكثر من خمسين وثيقة رسمية أو شبه رسمية، تتعلق بالمجمع مباشرة أو غير مباشرة، وهي ذات أهمية كبرى للكنيسة، من دون أدنى شك، في الحقل اللاهوتي والحقوقي والإداري.
