عرف الشرقيون شجرة الزيتون باكراً واعتبروها من الأشجار الخالدة وقدروا أهميتها من جميع النواحي، ولعل أكبر برهان على ذلك، عودة حمامة نوح بعد الطوفان، وفي فيها ورقة زيتون، رمز الخلاص...
وفي الواقع، استفاد الشرقيون بادئ ذي بدء من خشب هذه الشجرة المعروفة في بلادنا للتدفئة ثم اكتشفوا فائدة ثمرها كمادة للطعام فراحوا يحلون حبوبها ويأكلونها، ثم ما لبثوا أم اكتشفوا زيت حبوب الزيتون هذه وعرفوا أهميته سواء للأكل أم للإنارة أو كدواء مقو للجسم وكمضمد للقروح... وفي ما بعد استغلوا حتى ورق شجرة الزيتون مغلياً بالماء الساخن واستعملوه ضد داء السكري... إلخ.
والكنيسة بدورها اتخذت زيت الزيتون في الأساس لإنارة المعابد وأدرجته في رتبها الكنسية على غرار سابقاتها من الديانات. ومن أقدس هذه الرتب الطقسية السر الثاني الذي تعطيه الكنيسة للمؤمن الجديد بعد سر العماد، عنيت به سر التثبيت أو سر الميرون المقدس.
وغاية هذه الدراسة لزيت الميرون المقدس هي كشف أهمية هذه المادة الأساسية روحياً ومادياً وذلك استناداً إلى الكتاب المقدس وإلى كتابات بعض آباء الكنيسة. ثم الخوض في مكونات هذا الزيت الخاص المعطر بمواد طبيعية مختلفة ذات مفاعيل هامة لجسم الإنسان.
