ترجمة: بولس عطا الله في بداية القرن الرابع الميلادي عرفت الكنيسة في عهد الامبراطور ديوقلزيانوس وخلفائه المباشرين جاليريوس ومكسيميانوس ، أشد الاضطهادات ضراوة منذ أن ظهرت (303 – 311 ) ، ومنذ اهتداء قسطنطينوس وسلفه ليسنيوس ( 313 ) ، عاشت الكنيسة في عهد من السلام والرخاء . ولكن سرعان ما اضطرب هذا السلام في مدينة من أهم مدن الامبراطورية ، وكذلك في الكنيسة . كانت الاسكندرية مركزا للهيللينية ، مركزا للثقافة اليونانية وكذلك للثقافة المسيحية . وفي هذا الوقت حوالي عام 320 ، اضطربت نفوس الناس بسبب تبشير كاهن يدعى آريوس كان ملحقا بكنيسة من كنائس المدينة بوكاليس ، واكتسب آريوس الذي كان ناسكا تقيا شهرة واسعة وتأثيرا كبيرا في أوساط النخبة المسيحية في المدينة ، وخصوصا عند العذارى المكرسات . كان هذا سببا في الدعوة إلى إنشاء أول مجمع مسكوني ، حيث اجتمع عام 325 في أنطاكية ستة وخمسون أسقفا وفكروا في عقد مجمع شامل للشرق كله وللغرب أيضا ، وقد انعقد المجمع في نيقية في 20 من مايو من العام ذاته . كتاب المجامع المسكونية يتناول نشأة تلك المجامع في الشرق والغرب ، والأدوار التي قامت بها ، وقد تناول الألفية الأولى فيه كل من بيير كاميللو ، وبيير مارافال ، وتناول الألفية الثانية كل من بول كريستوف وفرنسيس فروست ، وترجمه بولس عطا الله ، وقام بمراجعته الأب الدكتور كاميللو بليني.
