يبحث الكاتب في مدى قدرة المشروع العربي الإسلامي الحديث، القائم على المزج بين العروبة والإسلام في التصدي للهجمة الشرسة التي تتحدى الأمة العربية، تلك القادمة من الغرب عامةً، ومن أمريكا بمساهمة مباشرة من الكيان الصهيوني، خاصةً.
وهنا يطرح الباحث سؤالاً كبيراً مفاده: هل الإسلام قابل للعصرنة؟ وهل يستطيع أن يتماشى مع الدولة المدنية؟ وخلال بحثه الأكاديمي، يرى الباحث أن الحكم الإسلامي، بعد وفاة الرسول، تحول من دولة دينية إلى دولة مدنية وعنده يجب عدم الخلط بين نظام الخلافة عند المسلمين والنظام الثيوقراطي، أي السلطان الإلهي في الدين المسيحي، فحسب الإمام محمد عبده: "ليس في الإسلام سلطة دينية".
كما يرى الباحث أن ما ينقصنا في العالم العربي أن يُقرأ الإسلام قراءة معاصرة غير متطرفة أو جامدة، حيث في تلابيبه مبادئ العدالة والحرية والمساواة، وهي في قالب ديمقراطي شعبي.
ويرى الباحث أن مشكلتنا الأساسية في الوطن العربي تكمن في الديكتاتوريات الفردية والجماعية، التي يجب التخلص منها، ومن اسنتاجاته، أنه لو عدنا إلى النصوص الإسلامية، فيجب أن نفرق بين الدين والشريعة، متطابقاً هنا مع النهضوي الإسلامي رشيد رضا، حين قال: "إن الدين شيء والشريعة شيء آخر، فالدين هو الأصول الثابتة، أما الشريعة فهي الأحكام العملية التي تختلف بإختلاف أحوال المجتمع والزمن وإستعداد الناس".
