كثرت المؤلفات التي درست وبحثت في شخصية سيف الله المسلول خالد بن الوليد، لكن القليلة منها أخذت منحى البحث المتخصص العلمي في الاستراتيجية والتكتيك وفن الحرب عند هذا القائد الأبرز في التاريخ الإسلامي. ويأتي هذا الكتاب ليصبح من هذه الفئة القليلة. ففي مجال التعبئة، يرى الكاتب أن خالد بن الوليد هو أول من أدخلها في نظام الجيش الإسلامي بمعنييها الاستراتيجي والتكتيكي. كما ينطبق الأمر ذاته على استخدام الحرب النفسية في إنهاك الروح المعنوية للعدو وتحطيم مقاومته. وكان خالد حسب المؤلف، يبتكر خططاً جديدة في كل معركة أو عملية أو حرب يخوضها، تتوافق مع فن إدارة العمليات القتالية والظروف السائدة أثناءها. إن كان من حيث العدد أو العتاد اللذين يمتلكهما العدو والصديق، أو من حيث الموقع أو الحشد النفسي أو ظروف التحالفات الدولية. يبحث المؤلف في المستوى القيادي الرفيع والرصين الذي كان لخالد في جميع معاركه وفتوحاته وحروبه الساخنة، ابتداءً بمعركة مؤتة وحروب الردة ومعركة أجنادين، التي كانت فاتحة معاركه مع الروم في بلاد الشام، ومعركة بصرى وفتح والشام والقدس وأنطاكية وجبلة واللاذقية ومعركة الديباج، وصولاً إلى معركة اليرموك الكبرى، التي غيرت مجرى تاريخ الشرق وكانت الحسام الذي استبدل إمبراطورية بأخرى. ويرى المؤلف أن ملامح عبقرية خالد العسكرية كانت وراء هذه المعركة، التي توج بها خالد حياته العسكرية، والتي تعتبر أول معركة عسكرية حقيقية ضخمة يخوضها المسلمون بأسلوب قتالي حديث، عاد الفضل فيه لخالد بن الوليد. يقدم هذا الكتاب ثقافة سياسية وعسكرية متميزة.
