حدثت موقعة كربلاء يوم العاشر من المحرم أوائل سنة 61 للهجرة، الموافق للعاشر من شهر تشرين الأول سنة 680م، وكان الجو حاراً جداً، وقد منع أعداء الحسين عنه وعن أهله وأصحابه جميع مقومات الحياة، حتى الماء والغذاء، بعد أن طرحوهم في صحراء كربلاء.
وأسفرت الموقعة الفاصلة عن استشهاد الإمام الحسين عليه السلام وجميع أنصاره وعددهم 72، منهم 17 من أبنائه وإخوته وأبناء عمومته، والباقي من الأصحاب، الذين تسابقوا إلى الشهادة في سبيل المبدأ، وآثروا الموت قبل أن يبرز للقتال أي فرد من أهل البيت عليهم السلام.
وبعد انتهاء المعركة حملت الرؤوس إلى والي الكوفة عبيد الله بن زياد، وأودع السبايا في السجن. ثم جاء الأمر من يزيد من دمشق بتسييرالرؤوس والسبايا من أطول طريق آهل بالسكان، فسيروا من الكوفة إلى الموصل شمالاً، ثم إلى حلب غرباً، ثم إلى بعلبك فدمشق جنوباً، في رحلة طولها 1400 كم.
وفي النصف من شهر صفر كان يزيد على موعد مع السبايا وزين العابدين عليه السلام لتوديعهم قبل توجههم إلى المدينة المنورة، حيث منازلهم ومدينة جدهم صلى الله عليه وسلم.
فيكون موضوع هذا الكتاب هو: مسيرة الرؤوس والسبايا من كربلاء إلى المدينة المنورة، ويشمل ذلك أربع مراحل متميزة: 1-تسييرهم أولاً من كربلاء إلى الكوفة. 2-تسييرهم في الطريق الطويل من الكوفة إلى الشام. 3-تسييرهم داخل دمشق. 4-تسييرهم من دمشق إلى المدينة المنورة.
