إن مدينة الكوفة التي أسست في بداية القرن الأول الهجري وقد كانت موضع اهتمام الخلفاء الراشدين وقد أصبحت عاصمة للإسلام في خلافة الإمام أمير المؤمنين علي عليه السلام، وقد حفلت بالأحداث ومر عليها زمن عاصمة للعلم والأدب ومحطة للعلماء والأدباء والشعراء. ومن هذا المنطلق فإن المؤرخين والعلماء في الشرق والغرب يهمهم كثيراً دراسة تاريخ هذا المصر العربي العريق وممن أحسنوا كتابة تاريخ هذه المدينة المؤرخ الشهير السيد "حسين حسن بن السيد أحمد البراقي النجفي" المتوفي عام 1332هـ.
مؤلف هذا الكتاب الذي كان يبذل الجهد في الإطلاع والاستطلاع ويقف بنفسه على الآثار لؤرخ لهذه المدينة، وليبين فضلها وتاريخها وخصائصها وأشهر مساجدها، وأهم الحوادث التي جرت بها، صحاريها، حدودها نزول القبائل فيها وخرابها بناءها، وضعها الاقتصادي ولاتها، نفسيات أهلها... هذا ليس كل ما تحدث عنه المؤرخ في هذا الكتاب بل يوجد في الكتاب أيضاً إطلالة بسيطة على نقباء الإشراق في الكوفة، الخط العربي أو الخط الكوفي، مسكوكات الكوفية، مدرسة الكوفة، البيوتات الطالبية العلوية في الكوفة، نحاة الكوفيين، شعراء الكوفة، اللغويون البارزون من الكوفيين.
كما وفي الكتاب وفقه مطولة عند فضل مسجد الكوفة، وقدم هذا المسجد، مؤسس مسجد الكوفة، مقامات مسجد الكوفة، استحبابا الاعتكاف في مسجد الكوفة، فضل الصلاة في مسجد الكوفة، كراهية الخروج من مسجد الكوفة قبل ظهر يوم الجمعة، ما ورد في مدح تربة الكوفة وأهلها، وأبواب مسجد الكوفة، آثار السيد بحر العلوم في مسجدي الكوفة والسهلة، ما ورد في القرآن في مدح الكوفة.
