يتضمن هذا الكتاب مجموعة دراسات وأبحاث قدمت كأوراق عمل في ندوات ومؤتمرات محلية وعربية وعالمية، وفي اجتماعات خبراء توزعت في عدة بلدان عربية، أعدتها ونظمتها هيئات ومؤسسات عربية بالتعاون مع مراكز أبحاث وهيئات دولية بينها مركز الأمم المتحدة للمستوطنات البشرية (الهابيتات)، واللجنة الاقتصادية والاجتماعية لغربي آسيا (الإسكوا) في هيئة الأمم المتحدة، ومنظمة المدن العربية والمعهد العربي لإنماء المدن، والمركز الديموغرافي بالقاهرة، واتحاد الجامعات العربية...
وتبرز أهمية هذه الدراسات في مجال البحث وعملية التخطيط والتنمية الحضرية، وقد نشر بعضها ضمن نتائج الندوات وفي مجموعات بحثية متفرقة، وذلك طيلة أكثر من عقدين من الزمن بين عامي 1979 و2000، وخلال سنوات من البحث العلمي في مجال التحضر العربي ونمو المدن والعواصم الكبرى وتزايد مشكلاتها.
وهكذا يختصر هذا الكتاب مرحلة زمنية طويلة وغنية بالباحث العلمي، وهو يمثل في تنوع موضوعاته سيرة حياة علمية ترافقت مع فترة الأحداث التي عانى منها لبنان. وهو يحتوي على أربعة محاور مشتركة توزعت كما يأتي: أولاً: واقع النحو الحضري ومستقبلة، ثانياً: آفاق التنمية الحضرية وإمكانات التعاون، ثالثاً: ما بعد القاهرة وكوبنهاغن واسطنبول، رابعاً: المدينة العربية: نشأتها وموقعها. هذه المحاور هي وحدات مشتركة لموضوعات متشابهة تلتقي وتصب في مجال واحد، وفي عنوان واحد "آفاق التحضر العربي"، مما يساعد في تسلسل البحث ويسلط الضوء على الصورة الواحدة بكافة أبعادها.
