المصنف هو أبو خيثمة زهير بن حرب بن شداد النسائي، حافظ كبير، ثقة ثبت حدث عن جماعة من الأئمة، حدث عن جماعة من الأئمة، مثل سفيان بن عينية، وهشيم بن بشير، ويحيى ابن سعيد القطان، وعبد الرحمن بن مهدي، ووكيع، وخلق. وعنه جماعة من الأئمة، منهم البخاري، وأكثر عنه مسلم، حتى روى عنه ألف حديث مائتي حديث وزيادة. اتفق العلماء على توثيقه. ولد سنة ستين ومائة، ومات سنة أربع وثلاثين ومائتين. وقد جمع في كتابه هذا طائفة من الأحاديث التي تتحدث عن العلم وفضله وعن العلماء وفضلهم ومنزلتهم عند الله عز وجل، وعن مكانتهم في الدنيا وفي الآخرة.
