غادر علي المقهى، اختفى عن أنظار صاحبيه تماماً، ساد الصمت برهة من الوقت فظلا دون كلام، ثم قطع حبل الصمت سؤال عبد المنعم لعبد الله: أين ذهب اليون؟ اليوم لم أذهب إلى أي مكان، صحوت ظهراً وظللت في البيت إلى العصر، وبعدها ذهبت إلى السوق ثم أتيت إلى هنا. ليم يتكلم عبد المنعم وظل متشاغلاً تارة بالنظر إلى التلفاز الذي يبث بعض الأغاني العربية وإلى الشارع المزدحم من خلال واجهة المقهى الزجاجية تارة أخرى، قال عبد الله: من أيام قلائل، كنت في المقهى هنا فوجدت صبياً جميل الشكل... رد عليه عبد المنعم وهو يغالب ابتسامة أخفاها متصنعاً الدهشة والتعجب: صحيح؟ إي والله، يريدني أن أفعل... فقال عبد المنعم متمماً هؤلاء الصبية أصبحوا كثيرين هذه الأيام! هل تعرف لماذا أحب الصبية؟ جاري عبد المنعم -صاحبه- سؤالاً بسؤال وهو يحدق في عينيه بعينيه المستعتين: لماذا؟ أنا أستغلهم لا تغلب على عقدة.
