سألني أوليفر إن كان بإمكاننا أن نلتقي لنناقش مشروعه الطّموح لصناعة سلسلة وثائقية بعنوان "التاريخ المجهول للولايات المتحدة".
بعد شهر، التقينا في لوس آنجلس، وشرح لي سبب اعتقاده أن هذا المشروع ضروري جداً، قال لي إن ثمةَ نقصاً حاداً في معلومات أهل البلاد عن ماضيهم.
بعد ذلك، أجرى معي لقاءاً مُصوّراً مدته سبع ساعات، تخللتها استراحات قصيرة لشرب الماء، كانت بعض كتبي إلى جانبه، ممتلئةً بالملاحظات والعلامات، كانت التجربة مثيرةً للتفكير والنشاط، وخاليةً تماماً من الكآبة أو الإنفعال، كانت مهمته واضحة، وقد مضى يقوم بها، نتيجة ذلك اللقاء – مع بعض التحرير التجميلي – هي هذا الكتاب الذي نضع بين أيديكم.
