في ليلة باردة من ليالي الشتاء، قرر صلاح الدين أن يكتب سيرته الذاتية، فرشح له الطبيب والفيلسوف اليهودي المعروف ابن ميمون صديقه ابن يعقوب. وبينما كان صلاح الدين يملي على كاتبه ذكريات شبابه، ونزواته، ومغامراته، كانت حوادث يومه وأحداثه تقطع عليه خيط الذاكرة المنساب. وبين هذا وذاك، نستمع إلى قصة حليمة، تلك الجارية الفاتنة التي أغوت صلاح الدين، فرفض أن يسلمها للرجم، بعد أن ارتكبت جريمة الزنا. نتعرف إلى السلطانة جميلة، وعالمها الذي يجري بين ابن سينا، فيلسوف المشرق، وابن رشد، فيلسوف المغرب. بل يفتح السرد أبوابه على عالم الحريم في القرون الوسطى، ذلك الزمن الذي لا يزال غارقًا في الظلام. وسط هذا كلّه سنرى بأعيننا قاهرة صلاح الدين، سنشاهد خيال الظل، وسنمضي في شوارعها وبين أهاليها، لنشاركهم احتفالات عيد النيروز. لكننا، مع ذلك، لن نفقد خيط التاريخ وهو يمد، سنحضر جلسات الحرب، ونشهد مناوراتها، ونرى عن قرب أعظم معارك التاريخ وهي تصنع. بمثل هذه الروعة، يجمع المؤلف، في الخيال، بين جلال الحقيقة وصدقها، وسحر الخيال وفتنته.
