يأخذ باب تأليف كتب الخيل عند العرب اهتماماً مختلفاً ويتجاوز أحياناً ما عرف من أشكال التأليف بسبب المداخل التي يتناولها وأساليب الكتابة التي يعرض لها وهو باب صرفت إليه عناية المؤلفين العرب منذ مرحلة مبكرة لأهمية الخيل في حياتهم واعتمادها في كثير من شؤونهم فكانت أبواب أسمائها وجها متميزا من وجوه التأليف والحديث عن أنسابها اهتماما له خصائصه في الحياة العامة لما يصاحب هذا الاهتمام من معان ويتداخل فيه من اعتبارات، فكان الاعتناء بأنساب الخيل جزءً من الاعتناء بالأنساب ذاتها وهو الاعتناء الذي رافق أنساب السلاح والمدن وكل ما له صلة بحياة العرب. واعتزاز العرب بخيلهم وحبهم لما كان مدار حوار طويل في قصائد الشعراء الذين وجدوا فيه ضربا من إظهار فلسفتهم في هذا الاعتزاز. وإذا كان عرب الجاهلية قد أفردوا لها من الاهتمام ما عبروا عنه من خلال الشعر فإن الإسلام قد أفاض في ذكرها بعد أن أصبح ارتباط الخيل بالجهاد واجباً، وللرسول الكريم فيها من الأحاديث ما يدل على هذا الاعتزاز. وحديث الخيل طويل والتأليف فيها أكثر. ولكن الذي يبقي هذا المد التأليفي نابضاً هو الصورة الرائعة التي امتلكها هذا الحيوان المتناسق والخصائص التي امتاز بها والأدوار الكبيرة التي قدمها للإنسان عبر رحلته الطويلة. وإذا كان القدامى من المؤلفين قد أكرموا الخيل بما قدموه من تأليف، فان المتأخرين ممن اعتنوا بهذا الضرب من التأليف قد أعادوا إلى هذا الحيوان الأصيل بعض أفضاله بإعادة ما طمس من معالم تلك التآليف أو إعادة ما نشر قبل عشرات السنين لتظل صورته الأصيلة قائمة، ويبقى دوره الرائد وجماليته الفذة وروعته النقية حية في كل عصر، ندية في كل زمن، دافقة في كل حركة. وأما الكتاب الذي بين يدي القارئ فهو من المؤلفات القديمة في هذا الباب. القسم الأول منه أو الكتاب الأول فيه لابن الكلبي الذي تناول نسب الخيل. وأما القسم الثاني أو الكتاب الثاني فهو لابن الأعرابي الذي خصصه لأسماء خيل العرب ولأسماء فرسانها. وجاء الكتاب محققاً، تدقيقاً، وتعليقاً وفهرسة.
