تقول الأسطورة: يحكي أن إمبراطوراً كان يحكم بلاداً مترامية الأطراف وكان أهم هذه الإمبراطورية مولعين بالأزهار على اختلاف أنواعها. كان لهذا الإمبراطور ولد أمير يعش الأزهار، فأقام في قصره حديثة جمع فيها كل أنواع الورود والأزهار، ذات الألوان الجميلة والرائحة الذكية. ولشدة اعتنائه بأزهاره كان يقضي معظم أوقاته معها ويجلب لحديقته من البلدان المجاورة ما ندر من الأزهار والورود حتى لقب بأبي الأزهار.
جاءته مرة آلهة الجمال في الحلم فشكرته على عمله واهتمامه بحديقته وطلبت منه أن يتزوج اثنتي عشرة أميرة كلهن يحملن أسماء أزهار من حديقته، وإنه إذا لم يفعل ذلك فإن الأزهار ستذبل والحياة في حديقته ستنتهي. لكن الأمير الشاب سخر من هذا الطلب بسبب اهتمامه بوروده، ولم يعر الحلم اهتماماً يذكر وتابع حياته كالمعتاد، ولم يخبر أحداً بذلك بعد عدة أيام عادت الآلهة من جديد وكررت طلبها من الأمير وألحت عليه بالزواج السريع حفاظاً على حديقته وأزهاره وفي هذه المرة أيضاً لم يعر الأمير الحلم اهتمامه إلى أن بدأت الورود بالذبول.
حزب الأمير كثيراً وقص على والده الحلمين ومجيء آلهة الجمال والطلب من الأمير الزواج باثنتي عشرة أميرة يجملن أسماء زهور من الحديثة. فرح الوالد كثيراً لأنه وجد الحجة التي سيستعملها لإقناع الأمير بالزواج وطلب من المنادي أن يعلم أن الأمير سيتزوج وإن الإمبراطور سيقيم حفلاً عظيماً في القصر وعلى الأميرات الراغبات بالزواج من الأمير أن يحضرن الحفلة شرط أن تكون أسماؤهن على أسماء الزهور.
