لا شك أنّ كل كائن بشري يحتاح لكي يعيش إلى جرعةٍ من العدوانية.
العدوانيةُ تعبيرٌ عن الحياة. أمّا العنفُ فهو شيء آخر مختلفٌ كل الاختلاف. لذلك يجب عدم الخلط بين العدوانية الطبيعية وبين العنف.
فالعنف عدوانيةٌ إرادية تهدف إلى إثارة ردّ الفعل عند الآخر بغرض إخضاعه بوجه عام، ولإثارة عنفٍ مضاد من طرفه بوجه خاص. ممّا يعني أنّ في العنف نيّةً سيّئة لا ريب فيها.
فالعنف إذنْ ظاهرة ثقافية وإنسانية نمطية. حيث لا يوجَد أيُّ عنفٍ عند الحيوانات، فالحيوانات تُظهِر عدوانيّتَها بالهجوم على فريستِها من دون أيّ دوافع الإيذاء، حيث لا دافِع غير دافع الغذاء.
فالعدوانية طبيعية، أمّا العنف فلا! يعني ذلك أن الإنسان الذي يلجأ إلى العنف حيوان مُنحطٌّ ومُتَدَنٍّ ومُتنكّس. فهو لا يملك انتظامًا طبيعيًا للعنف، بينما نشاهد عند الحيوان انتظامًا طبيعيًا للعنف. نشاهد هذا الانتظام مثلاً في صراع الذئاب الذكور عند اختيارها لرئيسها: فالذئب الذي يخسر المعركة يمدّ رقبته للرابح في إشارةٍ منه إلى الخضوع والانصياع، لكن الذئب المنتصر لا يقتله في النهاية. أما الإنسان فلا يملك هذا الانتظام، لذلك كان لا بدّ أن تحكمه ديانات وأعراف وقوانين. وهنا تكمن المشكلة، لأنّ الإنسان لم يعدْ يدري إنْ كانت هذه كافية أو غير كافية، بل وأكثر من ذلك، فقد انقلب حتى على قوانينه ودياناته. وتلك هي المشكلة الكبرى.
