يحاول هذا الكتاب إعادة قراءة النتاج المناري ومن ثم تفسير وتأويل بنية النصوص المنارية ومحمولاتها الفكرية والمعرفية في محاولة لإظهار الصورة الجديدة للشيخ رضا صاحب العقل المنفتح والباحث عن التواصل مع حضارة الغرب. فالعديد من الآراء والأحكام المسبقة كانت قد انتشرت لتجعل من نتاج المنار مثالاً نموذجياً معبراً عن جمود السلفية ومعداتها لحضارة الغرب.
والواقع أن هذه الآراء التي تبدّت لسنين طويلة وكأنها حقائق ثابتة لم تعد على تفسير منطوق النص المناري الذي يفاجئ القارئ بخروجه على المألوف حين يفرد مساحات واسعة للتحليلات والاهتمامات، بل والمقالات الكثيرة الخاصة بالغرب والغربيين.
وقد حاول المؤلف في هذا الكتاب الابتعاد بادئ ذي بدء عن صياغة تركيبات وفرضيات ذهنية مسبقة يمكن أن تضفي على التفسير قبلية وأسبقية فكرية. وهذه الاعتبارات المنهجية الأولى أفضت إلى ما يشبه الطريقة الإحصائية في استلال المعلومات والموضوعات التي تركز عليها نصوص المنار السياسية.
وهذا السبر الإحصائي المنبثق من النصوص، والمرتكز على بعض مناهج الفلسفات الحديثة، سمح باستنباط فكرة الدراسة وإشكاليتها التي تحددت بفلسفة التجديد التي اعتمدها أهل السنة في المواجهة الحضارية مع الغرب. ويقول المؤلف بأنه، وبالرغم مما تطرح فكرة الدراسة وإشكاليتها على العموم من قضايا ذات توجه أيديولوجي فإنه يطمح إلى إظهار براءة هذه الدراسة من تعمّد الالتزام بأي توجه أيديولوجي أو أحكام مسبقة.
فالشك في صدق انطباق الجمود على سلفية المنار ليس موقفاً أيديولوجياً مسبقاً ابتدعته هذه الدراسة، وإنما هو نتيجة لاستقراء طاول مواقف المنار الانفتاحية وآلياتها المعرفية التي احتذى بعضها حذو المعرفيات الغربية من غير تفريط بمقومات الشرق العربي المجتمعية والدينية، وإن لم يكن استقراءً فلعله نقد وتحليل.
