يعدّ ألبرت اشفيتسر، مؤلف هذا الكتاب، واحداً من أنبل الشخيات العالمية في القرن العشرين، وهو فيلسوف أخلاقي، ومرشد روحي يدعو إلى حب الإنسانية قولاً وعملاً، ومبدؤه الأساسي هو توفير الحياة. وكان واسع العقلية متعدد الجوانب الفكرية. فكان لاهوتياً مؤرخاً للمسيحية والمسيح، ومفسراً للأناجيل بروح نقدية. وكان بالإضافة إلى ذلك طبيباً لم يستخدم طبه إلا من أجل العناية بأبدان الفقراء والبدائيين في أفريقية الوسطى. كما كان عازفاً على الأورغن ممتازاً، وباحثاً في تاريخ الموسيقى؛ وخصوصاً موسيقى يوهان سبستيان ياخ، ونظراً إلى نزعته الإنسانية الشاملة ودعوت المستمرة إلى السلام بين الناسن منح جائزة نوبل للسلام في سنة 1952. يقول اشفيتسر عن نفسح: "ثمّ فكرتان ألقيتا بظلهما على وجودي: أحداهما هي ما تبين لي أن العالم حافل بالأسرار التي لا يمكن تفسيرها، وبالآلم. والثاني هي أنني ولدت في عصر يتميز بالانحلال الروحي لبني الإنسان. وقد صار مألوفاً عندي، كما صرت أنا مستعدً للتعامل مع كل واحد على أساس الفكرة التي اقتادتني إلى العالم الأخلاقي والتوكيد الحيوي. وفي هذا المبدأ وجدت أساساً راسخاً وطريقاً واضحاً للسير. ولهذا فإني أقف وأعلم عمل من يسعى إلى جعل الناس أقل خجلاً وأسمى أخلاقاً يجعلهم يفكرون".
لقد رأى اشفيتسر بأن الإنسان في العصر الحالي يتعرض طوال حياته لتأثيرات تعمل على سلبه كل ثقة في تفكيره المستقل. وروح الاعتماد على الغير روحياً وهو الأمر الذي يُدعى دائماً إليه، تتجلى في كل ما يسمع أو يقرأ، وفي الأشخاص الذين يلتقون به كل يوم، وتسود كل ظروف حياته. ومن خلال كتاب هذا الفيلسوف "فلسفة الحضارة" يقدم المترجم إلى القارئ العربي قراءة أشمل وأعمق لهذه الآراء التي ظل ألبرت اشتفيتسر يدعو إليها طوال حياته المديدة.
