وليس هناك من شك في أن مثل هذا التفكير الفلسفي في تاريخ الحضارة هو تفكير مستقبلي بقدر ما هو دراسة للماضي، ذلك أن أي تأمل تاريخي يبدأ في الحقيقة من اهتمام بالحياة الحاضرة، فواقعة التاريخ الماضي لا تنفصل تماماً عن الواقع الحي في حس مؤرخ الحضارات، ومثل هذا الاهتمام هو الذي يجعل الحوار بين الماضي والحاضر ممكناً في عمله وهو وحده الذي يضفي عليه معنى خاصاً لدى معاصريه.
